Schladming boasts around 40 restaurants offering a wide range of cuisine for all budgets, although the majority naturally offer traditional Austrian fayre.Schladming is a pleasant place in the evening, especially since the large main square was pedestrianised making it possible to completely relax as you stroll around shops and cafés in the early evening. It is an intermediate resort; not great for beginners. -the off-piste ski area is very narrow: there is a good 200 meters gap north face from the Gipfel in Hauser Kaibling, and the "secret slope", but not really more.
Was late in the season (mid-late March) and snow suffering from warmish weather, but slopes groomed and maintained well. The leading resort in the Steiermark area of Austria and of the Dachstein area of the Tauern mountains is a very well established regional centre, as well as being the centre of the Dachstein Ski area. There's not a lot especially geared towards children aged under 4 - a rather soggy public playpark and the swimming pool are the two major assets. An awesome holiday. -extra wide, well groomed and pretty easy slopes, with ski canons on most of them. But come on, lets admit it openly, a ski resort with a base at 700 meters and summit at less than 1900 meters can't pretend to be a top ski resort. -the daily ski pass costs 46€, which is about 20% more than in France, compared to this type of ski area (you pay for the very good ski lifts and the amusement park!). It's a good resort but slopes can suffer on the bottom 3rd if there is a lack of snow. To the west the lifts of the Reiteralm above Pichl Mandling. Great apres-ski; cheap food and beer. It's mid November and the Planai top slopes are open already due to the early snow plus the abundant snow making machines. (1) If snow conditions are poor at Schladming, it will be poor everywhere nearby, (3) there are good alternatives within an hours drive, (5) other locations on the same lift pass provide a rich variety of snowsure ski conditions. -the ski resort is in a very low valley and all of the ski area is under 2000 meters. I really cannot understand why anyone would enjoy this resort. For a third year in a row we are experiencing very high temperature and rain in January which is absolutely ridiculous. Thus, it's a good ski area for skiing when it's snowy. (1) Occasionally gets enough snow for skiing, (2) is often closed due to a lack of snow, (3) occasionally suffers from a lack of snow, (4) rarely suffers from a lack of snow, (5) Schladming is snowsure even in the poorest seasons. Today Schladming is a small lively town with a good selection of shops, bars, restaurants and hotels. And Schladming looks a bit like a city, even more because there is not snow every time in the resort (it's too low). It was the best experience. On the other hand, the pedestrianised centre means it's not so dangerous when a bored child decides to run out of some shop where you're studying the ski gear bargains, and the toboggan run and sleigh rides are always popular.
