Love the imagery she uses and the simple yet very masterful way she uses words. While it is easier to probe great depths in more loquacious form, Oliver is able to probe these depths with an immensely straightforward format. Dems good poems!

It is quite remarkable that she is Poet Laureate and that these poems are on English Literature syllabuses throughout the land. Some of her dramatic monologues are extraordinary. My favorite of his work--naturally--are the lyrics that blossom from his home geography, opening up the ostensibly prosaic aspects of working-class Detroit life into something beautiful, ephemeral, introspective, true. Black Sand brings together poems selected from Baugh’s two previous collections, A Tale from the Rain Forest (Sandberry Press 1988) and It was the Singing (Sandberry Press, 2000), with a collection’s worth of new poems.

Eighteen years later, I finally finished reading it. It is as though the effort is to overcome the inadequacies of language through its sheer rhythmic and musical power -- a kind of primal power to enthrall, to entrance. Levine has no good news to bring; he is an apocalyptic poet, in the same way that T. S. Eliot was -- blasted and degraded Detroit is Levine's Waste Land, and in many ways he surpasses Eliot in making bleakness and ugliness beautiful. This book covers several decades of her work, and as much as I don't consider myself a nature poetry aficionado, her stuff just works. These works are interesting for their insight into twentieth century Detroit, but seemed quite ordinary to me, and not memorable.Tempting to rate this higher, but it struck me, upon closer examination, that the poems in this work plateau in the selections from "Ashes" (1979) and "1933" (earlier), and that much of the later work, by comparison, is rather average. New and Selected Poems, Volume One book. I say very masterful to mean that she takes words and seems to dance with them prior to committing to paper.

I love reading Mary Oliver's poetry.
Her incredible gift with language, combined with her deep connection to the natural world, and her sharp insight into the condition of being human, all make for a breathtaking experience reading her work. Philip Levine works on so many levels and can be enjoyed by anyone. I didn't discern any kind of rhyming structure in any of her poetry which is about random subjects and themes which have got little or no connection with the poet. What a wonderful way to ease into the day.
I start each day with God, poetry and a book of meditations. Mary Oliver's poetry has depth, breadth, and a whispered sort of beauty. In these strange days of quarantine and isolation, books can be a mode of transport.

The only poetry I've read in a long time that forces me to become introspective and reflect on the world at largeMary Oliver always gets top score in my estimation, and this collection is no exception. It contains some of my favorite poems in the world. She has a quicksilver intelligence that can move from ribald mimicry one moment to an intensely tough and affecting lyricism the next.
She writes about nature using simple yet powerful images.
His poems are very easy to read--not much rhyming, great meter and wonderful imagery.
