Business as mission is: Profitable and sustainable businesses Intentional about kingdom of God purpose and impact on people and nations Focused on holistic transformation and the multiple bottom lines of economic, social, environmental, and spiritual outcomes Offering counsel on a wide-range of questions from actual readers like you!More and more people have begun talking about combining business and missions these days, yet the concept has been slow to catch on in some circles. However, one needs to be the emphasis (with one exception, which I’ll mention at the end). The Business as Mission Conference is the most comprehensive global gathering of business people, mission agencies, churches, academia, and students who thrive on the convergence of business and missions. The business has served as a model for believers in the country and has also provided employment for local Christians.BAM and tentmaking are not revolutionary ways of doing missions but are increasingly useful for opening doors for the gospel. It would be the equivalent of reaching New York and Los Angeles, but not the heartland. Business as mission is demonstrating what the Kingdom of God is like in the context of business – and as we do so, engaging with the world’s more pressing social, economic, environmental and spiritual issues.

From a vocational perspective, it would be great to gain “profit & loss” experience, or to manage a business or team in preparation for BAM involvement. As mentioned above, there are also opportunities for Christian business owners living stateside to be involved. One way we have seen this happen is when people migrate for the gospel—that is, move somewhere permanently. We publish fresh weekly content on The BAM Review Blog and send emails twice monthly to our subscribers, introducing them to new resources and content. The BAM movement is making a positive impact around the globe.I am excited to see how the BAM Global network will specifically impact the epidemic of human trafficking around the world, connecting the BAM model with restoration, prevention and freedom for the 27 million men, women and children trapped in modern day slavery. Not all Christians are called to “fulltime ministry,” but all are called to minister fulltime. There is a growing consensus around this idea, although other terms are also used for the same concept. We don’t believe business Why are BAM and tentmaking, rather than traditional mission models, increasingly important?

As well as curating business as mission resources, we also create them!

Visit the BAM Library, a curated collection of recommended BAM resources.

For instance, we worked with a couple who were quickly approved by their church to be sent to drive a business in the Middle East. Why is that?PDF, ePub, and Kindle files will be sent to this email address. We must continue to explore ways to engage the vast and largely untapped kingdom potential of business as mission. As Christians in the market place we have many responsibilities – spiritual, economic, social and environmental; we discharge these through the practice of good business, business practices that make sense for all stakeholders. You may unsubscribe at any time. Our work is possible by the generosity of our readers. In addition, it is very helpful to learn the local language ahead of time.

This was how missions used to be done since it was so hard to come back to one’s home country. It’s forecast that by 2030, this number will rise to more than 60 percent. Tim Keller has noted that there is a shared affinity among professionals in the large cities of the world that transcends culture: arguably a professional in Los Angeles has more in common with a professional in New Delhi than either of those people do with those in rural areas in their own countries. How can pastors best equip their members who are considering working overseas? College students, who have a plethora of study abroad options and time to invest, should consider language learning. Absent a clear partner, we would strongly discourage church member from moving to a foreign city, regardless of how good the professional opportunity looks.Preparation for going overseas in this manner involves being a faithful and fruitful member of a local church. We encourage pastors to learn more about these opportunities to help their members use their skills and experience to make disciples of all nations. But Christian companies and business leaders do not automatically accomplish missional purposes. The BAM Conference in Chicago will bring together over 300 people from across the US and around the world. The current website, launched in late 2014, is the fourth version of the site. For example, a friend had a high-powered position with a US multinational in Egypt; however, he found it very difficult to be fed spiritually and was discouraged by the whole process.Pastors should specially focus on evaluating the lives of members who are thinking about living overseas. And the emphasis you choose will affect your preparation and expectations. For the Christian who emphasizes professional development, life abroad will probably end up consisting of shorter stints of maybe 2 to 3 years. Second, pastors should put before their members the vision and privilege of spreading the gospel to all nations, particularly among those who have not heard (Rom. Our challenge is great, but so is the opportunity – hundreds of millions of our fellow human beings have never heard a clear Gospel message, one billion don’t have access to clean drinking water, hundreds of millions have no job.
