Sign up to our newsletterIt’s one of the more memorable images from 1970s television - and it was captured on Tyneside.Somewhat incredibly it’s 44 years this week since Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads was first aired on BBC1.Viewers were treated to an opening title sequence filmed at various locations around a rapidly changing Tyneside.In this famous clip, Terry Collier, played by actor James Bolam, is left fuming at the bus stop as his bus goes whizzing past without stopping.If you went searching for this film location in 2017, you’d find a very different scene.Byker, like other areas of Tyneside, was going through a period of physical change.Many of the old terraced streets here, like elsewhere, would soon be swept away.The other Likely Lad, of course, was Bob Ferris, as played by actor Rodney Bewes.The “Whatever Happened To...” series began in January 1973, ending in December the following year, and was the sequel to a black and white series screened a decade earlier.Written by Whitley Bay-born Ian Le Frenais and his sidekick Dick Clement, the comedy - set purportedly on Tyneside - followed the scrapes of Terry and Bob and their uncomfortable passage through the changing world of the 1970s.The show’s title sequences, with its ever-so nostalgic theme song, reflect that change.Even at the series’ inception, however, Bolam seemed uncomfortable with the Likely Lads’ popularity.In a spiky interview with the Chronicle in 1973, he said: “I’m not Terry Collier.
